AFL: Aaron Francis chooses Sydney culture over Essendon

Aaron Francis says Sydney, not Essendon, is the “best environment for me to find my potential” after the key defender’s trade north was confirmed on Wednesday.

The deal was confirmed straight after the 3pm trade window opened, with the Swans getting Francis for Essendon’s future fourth round selection.

Taken at pick six in the 2015 draft, Francis promised much for the Bombers but endured a complicated six seasons in red and black that included a break from the game as he weighed up his future.

As Essendon continues to navigate off-field and board issues, Francis, now 25, said a move to the Swans, who played off in this year’s grand final, could help him deliver his best football.

“Sydney is a club with an excellent culture and great leadership and it’s probably the best environment for me to find my potential,” he said

“This gives me a great opportunity to play my best football.

“Hopefully, I can provide some support in defence, and the coaching staff are really keen for me to realise my potential.

“To the Essendon playing group, I want to say thank you to all of them. They have been a huge layer of support for me since arriving at the club, and I wish them all the best.”

Francis played 54 games for the Bombers and Swans football manager Charlie Gardiner said his versatility to play forward and back made him a welcome addition to the club.

“Aaron is a player we identified as a priority to bring in during the trade period,” Gardiner said.

“We believe he has the talent and attributes to improve our team and provides added flexibility in our key position roles.

“We’re really pleased to have Aaron joining us, and we’re hopeful that we can maximise his talents in Sydney.

“We thank Essendon for their assistance to arrive at a trade that worked for both parties.”
